Brown County is a smaller, very rural county located in west-central Illinois, founded in 1839 (out of Schuyler County) and named in honour of U.S. Gen. Jacob Brown. The county seat is Mount Sterling. Other towns/villages include Versailles, Cooperstown, Ripley and Mound Station. The character of Brown County is strongly rural: rolling hills, farmland, few large urban areas, and much open space. Housing tends to consist of modest single-family homes, farmhouses, occasional acreage properties and very few large subdivisions. According to recent data, the median sales price was about $144,000 in September 2025. Zillow lists average value around ~$124,189 earlier. Because the area is so rural and land plentiful, building a new home could start at the low hundreds of thousands if land is ready for development (e.g., $200K-$300K depending on finishes) — but less than many suburban markets. The nearest large city would be Springfield or possibly Quincy or Peoria region, meaning somewhat distant access to large-city amenities. The lifestyle is decidedly rural: expect quiet countryside, agricultural neighbours, and small-town community.
